Episcopal Church of the Advent

Logo for local church

Short and sweet. March - April 2025.

I was asked to make a logo for the Episcopal Church of the Advent here in Louisville, Kentucky. The request to take on this project came in the middle of an enormously busy period of time, and I’ll be honest, I almost said no. But I took a second, and realized that despite the stress it’s always good to push yourself. Ultimately, I’m really glad I did this one. It provided a nice brain break in the middle of my larger Atlanta project, and was a good time.

Austin at Advent asked for something that reflected the rosettes that are carved (I believe) into the pews at Advent. He sent me a few examples. The ones he shared were all circles, and were generally floral. I pass Advent on the bus every day to work. The red doors out front always strike me, so I wanted to be sure to capture those in some sort of way. Finally, in the aforementioned rosettes, many of the carvings have some sort of thing in the center. The one I liked the most vaguely alluded to an “a” similar to the options in the center and on the right below.

The folks at Advent liked the one on the far right the most so I made some further tweaks to it including clarifying the "a" in the middle. I spent a while messing with a few things here, and ultimately landed on using the type “a.” The guiding principle in this project was to not do too much. I wanted it to be elegant, but not too busy.

I’ve made an extra option where part of the logo is filled in. Generally I like the other one, but it’s a nice alternative.

Austin put this about the logo in the Easter bulletin:

"Inspired by the many rosettes and carvings that adorn our historic building, Advent’s logo is representative of several significant things. The incomplete circle is symbolic of the relationships that unite us while keeping space for all people. The floral pattern calls to mind the arched doors of Advent through which we all are welcomed. The letter A represents both the Greek Alpha character, recalling Alpha and Omega, one of the names Christians have for God (both symbols are carved in the marble of the high altar), and the familiar name with which so many refer to our parish, simply “Advent.” The logo will change colors in accordance with the liturgical colors, reminding us of the changing seasons and events of the Church that accompany the changing seasons and events of our own lives."
